The Digital IXUS ( IXY Digital in Japan and PowerShot Digital ELPH in US and Canada) is a series of digital cameras released by Canon. It is a line of ultracompact cameras, originally based on the design of Canon's IXUS/IXY/ELPH line of APS cameras. Like all compacts with a zoom lens, cameras in the IXUS range are susceptible to the "lens error" message if the lens is physically unable to zoom in or out. On Canon cameras, this manifests as the E18 error or the message "Lens error, restart camera" on more recent models.

These shots of a white coloured wall were taken at a distance of 1.5m. With the camera’s Auto ISO setting aptly choosing the lowest manually selectable option of ISO100, the shot is amazingly clear and crisp for a budget snapper and there’s no noise to report in shadow areas. The more standard Optical IS system also makes an appearance, helping to stabilise the camera's 28-112mm objective by up to three EV stops when shooting still images.
Like its sibling IXUS models, here we have a display of lovely natural colours from the 115 HS in this also crisply detailed extreme close up shot; those who do purely want to point and shoot and get decent results without spending a lot up from could do far worse than consider this budget model. There's also a high speed burst mode which captures 3MP images at an 8.2fps burst rate, and full-resolution 3.7fps burst rate should 3MP be too limiting. By contrast a handheld maximum 112mm (35mm equivalent) telephoto shot from the same vantage point. Considering that this is a snapshot model we’re impressed with the level of detail maintained here.

Nor did we notice corner shading when using the flash, nor particularly pronounced barrel distortion - which is all good news. However, familiar bugbears such as pixel fringing between areas of high contrast do inevitably remain.
